The lecture hall
Named lectures each year.
An endowed fund at VCU Health's Pauley Heart Center. It pays for lectures, teaching, and training for cardiology fellows. Alumni of the fellowship and past faculty are part of it too.
In medicine, the learning never ends. Every year brings a new drug, a new device, a new way to see inside the heart. I have watched that progress for forty years, and I have been fortunate to be part of some of it. But progress has to be taught. Someone has to stand before the fellows and show them what the new knowledge means in context, and how it can be applied properly. That is what this lectureship is for: the next generation of heart doctors, who will carry the work on after our time.
And there is one thing I hope they never lose. As much as the science matters, a patient is not a scan or a number. The relationship between a doctor and a patient, the trust, the time taken to listen, heals in ways no machine can. Let the technology advance. Let the human connection advance with it. Laxmi and I made this gift so that both go hand in hand.
